This month
USD 2-day lending averaged 7.11% APR in August (volume-weighted), about the same as July's 7.18%. Both months were a clear step up from February through June, when monthly averages ranged from 4.59% to 5.44%. No day in August averaged below 5%.
Volume, on the other hand, was much lower. USD 2-day lending filled about 11.3 billion USD in June, but only about 3.3 billion in July and 3.4 billion in August. Less new money went out on loan, at higher rates.
USDT fell back from 8.10% in July to 6.22%. Its daily averages stayed between 5.24% and 7.55% all month, a narrower range than USD.
Longer periods averaged more than 2-day loans: 8.85% for USD 30-day, 9.68% for USD 120-day and 9.15% for USDT 120-day, while USDT 30-day was close to its 2-day rate. Volume was thinner, though: about 0.8 billion USD for USD 30-day and 1.75 billion for 120-day, and both USDT long periods did less than a tenth of USDT 2-day volume. Borrowers can also repay early, so this gap isn't extra return you'd be sure to earn by lending long.
How the numbers work
- 01Data comes from Bitfinex's public funding candles for fUSD and fUST, at the p2, p30 and p120 periods. Times are UTC, and anyone can recompute these numbers from the same API.
- 02Daily APR = that day's volume-weighted average daily rate × 365, not compounded. The 2-day figures use hourly candles; 30- and 120-day figures use daily candles.
- 03The monthly average is weighted by the whole month's volume, not a simple average of the daily figures.
- 04After the 15% fee = average APR × 0.85, the share lenders actually receive. It doesn't account for time your money sits idle between loans.
- 05Typical range: the month's hourly closing rates ranked by volume, taking the 10th and 90th percentiles.
- 06We don't list the single highest or lowest fills: tiny trades often print extremes like 0% or several hundred percent, which would only mislead.
Rates are set by the market, and past numbers don't predict future returns. For how interest is calculated, see How Bitfinex lending interest works; for picking a loan period, see Bitfinex lending period.
